Will They Take Security Serious Now?

Life is an irony, and nothing has reflected that better than an unfortunate event today. A Nigerian Senator, GYANG DALYOP DATONG, of Plateau State and of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has been murdered by gunmen while he was attending a burial ceremony today. He was shot dead. Before his demise, he was the chairman of the Senate Committee on Health.
The late Senator GYANG DALYOP DATONG
Abraham Yiljap is the state's Commissioner of Information and he has confirmed the unfortunate incident. Born in 1957, he studied medicine and got his MBBS from the University of Jos, Plateau State and later received an MPH from the University of Ghana in Legon. He represented the Plateau North Senatorial District and was formerly a member of the nation's House of Representatives where he represented the Barkin Ladi and Riyom Constituency. He assumed office as a senator in 2011 and his term was supposed to end in 2015 when new elections will then be held. The late senator was married.

The late Senator was trained as a medical doctor, was a family man and headed the Senate Committee on Health.

The gunmen took the Senator's life but did not end there as they went ahead to also snuff life out of the Chief Whip of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Honourable GYANG JAMES FULANI while a third, Honourable SIMON MWADKWON was critically injured. The legislators lost their lives while attending a mass burial for tens of citizens killed -again, by unknown gunmen. By the time the storm settled, 20 people lost their lives at the mass burial ceremony.

Map shows Plateau State (in red).

Plateau State is one of the most beautiful states in Nigeria, attracting many tourists and was one of the most peaceful in the West African nation but things have fallen apart and the plateau has turned to a volcano. There are incessant killings of defenceless citizens and the government has been utterly helpless in the face of the tragedies. The myth in Nigeria is that legislators are heavily guarded but now that one of them has been unfortunately cut short in broad daylight, will the government tackle insecurity seriously now? The government of President Jonathan budgeted N1 trillion naira for security but kaka kewe agbon de, lile ni le si.

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.
