Reports reaching us from Western India via Associated Press says that a man who got angry over his daughter's lifestyle has chopped off her head with a sword. After that, he did a more bizarre thing: he paraded the head round the village (can anything be stranger than that?) after which he then surrendered himself to the authorities.
The man is Ogad Singh and is a marble miner while the daughter is 20 years old, and had been under her parents in a village called Dungarji in Rajasthan. That was after she left her husband two years ago (when did she marry then?)
The Police Superintendent (Umesh Ojha) say that Singh was furious because his daughters had been having affairs with men (???, na women before????) and he became really enraged when the daughter eloped with one of the men a couple of weeks ago.
He then forced her to return home on Sunday and the next day, he beheaded her with a sword. In India, honour killings, domestic abuse/violence are mingled in a society that is facing a terrific clash of modern values and age-long traditions. Youths want to have fun and live a more liberal lifestyle but the parents say no, they want to protect their own pride irrespective of what the youths think. And in many cases, the parents over-react, and this is a typical example.
