And He Sacrificed His Life For Her...

There is nothing like love. Nothing like true love. It is always tested from time to time and in the process, many have given the ultimate sacrifice for their lovers by laying down their own lives. On the 20th of July, 2012, a young man entered a theatre in Colorado, US (people were watching a movie titled The Dark Knight Rises) and opened fire at random at the audience. By the time the dust settled, 12 people were dead and 58 injured. Among the dead was Jansen Young's military boyfriend. Jansen survived the shooting but that was because her boyfriend Jon Blunk laid on top of her during the shooting, shielding her with his body. But in the process, Blunk was hit by the gunman's bullet. 

She said that immediately the shooting started, he shoved her to the concrete floor and covered her with his body. 

She narrates in tears. 

Hear her: 

“He pushed my hips to the floor and he’s like, Jansen, Jansen get down and stay down,” she said. “He kind of pushed me in under the seat and pushed on me real hard and he was laying up against me, he kind of whispered in my ear, ‘There’s someone with a gun and he’s shooting people.’”

“I didn’t know, but he knew immediately that it was real,” she said.

Even while the shooting was going on, she found it difficult to believe it was real  not even after a woman in the row above her was shot. While narrating the event with eyes full of tears, she called Jon ' a great hero'. 


“I was thinking about what a great hero he was and he provided me the opportunity to survive,” she said. “He wasn’t just a hero last night, he has been a hero forever,” she said.


After the shooting, she shook Jon calling him severally to let them go but Jon was gone. 

Love is when you put the welfare of your partner before yours. There can be no better demonstration than this. Rest in peace, Jon.

THE KILLER: 


He is 24 years old. His name his James Holmes, and finished with the highest honours in neuroscience from the University of California and was already on course to start his PhD at the University of Colorado. Described as a cool, shy, intelligent and nice guy, he wore full-body bullet-proof kit while carrying out his devilish act. He legally bought all the four weapons that he used. 


The police chief describes his dressing: 


"dressed all in black; he was wearing a ballistic helmet, a tactical ballistic vest, ballistic leggings, a throat protector and a groin protector and a gas mask, and black tactical gloves..."


The police came to the scene within 90 seconds and he did not resist arrest. He had legally bought 6,000 rounds of ammunition. After the shooting, he headed for the exit and wanted to leave but another person blocked the exit door on the other side and while Holmes was banging on the door, the police arrived. Holmes has no previous criminal record. And interestingly, he studied the biological basis of psychiatric and neurologic disorders. He dyed his hair red and called himself, 'The Joker'.
