Why You Must Stop Nail Biting (Onychophagia)

Yes, I know it is hard and I really understand how difficult it can be (don't ask me why joor....lmao!) but nailbiting can actually be conquered. Well, let's talk a little about ONYCHOPHAGIA (that's the medical term) or nail biting. Described as a compulsive (difficult to control) habit, it is found in people of all ages. Actually, about 25% of adults, 45% of teenagers and 30% of children bite their nails! That's bitingly painful! Stress can induce it anyway.

Stop it now!
And there are very negative consequences from nail biting. By biting on the nails, the cuticle becomes damaged and it becomes quite easy for viruses and bacteria to penetrate. In a case where you swallow broken nails infected with microorganisms, you may end up infecting the gastrointestinal tract. And another thing is that the hands can be seriously disfigured after years of biting. And yes, let me tell you (from experience), it can be extremely painful, especially when you bite off on a nerve or a blood vessel and you start bleeding, the pain can last for hours (Mariam Imam, thank you very much for the supermedication even though YOU used the jazz from Hijaz...lol!).
Atimes, you are not even conscious of it, and some are so addictive that they still bite their nails during sleep.
Still on the matter, nail biting endangers your teeth and oral health. Yeah, we know you don't smoke or drink and you may see nail biting as harmless but it is not! Okay, let's take a look at it: it is highly unhygienic. Your nails are incredibly dirty even after washing them, they still harbour countless germs. And remember, it is difficult to clean nails, when you bite on these nails, you can easily puncture your gums and voila! Viruses and bacteria swim into your bloodstream.

And again, it is not even good as far as looks are concerned, it spoils your nails and no one really likes to see you biting your nails and maybe even drooling saliva! lol! You can also make your teeth ragged with the constant biting. Hope you gerrit? Good.

NB: The exact cause of nail biting is not known.

The ragged nails of a biter.
TREATMENT

The nice thing here is that there is a treatment even though it does not taste too nice. You will buy a nail polish made from some of the most bitter chemical compounds in existence, denatonium benzoate and you may also incorporate protective mouthpieces. Behavioral therapists can also be consulted. And yeah, do not be stressed or tensed. Wishing you the best as you begin to drop this habit. I conquered it, and you too can!

SPECIALLY DEDICATED TO MARIAM IMAM (DDDD) who supported and helped Iyaniwura battle onychophagia successfully :)

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

    1. Nail biting may be genetic but the research on this is not clear at all so we cant be too sure. As for Mariam Imam, she didn't invent the polish, in fact I didn't even use it but she made me believe that I could conquer the powerful addiction of nail biting. I really never thought I could get over it. Her encouragement worked more than any drug and for that, I express my sincere gratitude to HER :) Thanks for your time!
